Industrial Applications for Thermal Image Fusion: Pixel-Level Fusion of Thermo-Plasticity, Night vision

Industrial Applications for Thermal Image Fusion: Pixel-Level Fusion of Thermo-Plasticity, Night vision
The fusion of thermal and visible imagery combines the useful information contained in each wavelength in one image. However, image fusion is complex process because it should decide on the data value and content of each input image then combine them in real-time. Current work introduces a real-time implementation of an intelligent fusion routine capable of applying the thermo-plasticity analysis to evaluate a stamping process, while using the visible data to decide on any defectives accurate location. The book also discusses another fusion implementation for vehicular night vision systems, which can combine the information from reflective and emissive objects in real-time while identifying pedestrians and other objects using its temperature signature and morphology (shape).

Digital Enhancement of Night Vision and Thermal Images

Saturday 21 January 2012 - Filed under books 1973 and later

Digital Enhancement of Night Vision and Thermal Images
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A536024. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Low image contrast limits the amount of information conveyed to the user With the proliferation of digital imagery and computer interface between man-and-machine, it is now viable to consider digitally enhancing the image before presenting it to the user, thus increasing the information throughput. This thesis explores the effect of the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) process on night vision and thermal images With better contrast, target detection and discrimination can be improved. The contrast enhancement by CLAHE is visually significant and details are easier to detect with the higher image contrast. Analyzing the image frequency response reveals increases in the higher spatial frequencies. As higher frequencies correspond to image edges, the power increase is viewed as corresponding to edge enhancement and hence, an increase in visible image details. This edge enhancement is perceived as improvement in image quality. This is further substantiated by a subjective testing, where a majority of human subjects agreed that CLAHE- enhanced images are more informative than the original night vision images.
